Custom Deck Builder in Grand Rapids, MI
Composite, TimberTech, AZEK, and custom wood decks built across West Michigan by Scott Kenyon and a crew that treats your yard like their own.
The Deck You Actually Use
Most homeowners don’t need a bigger house. They need a better backyard. A deck that fits how your family actually lives, where you host summer dinners, where kids play after school, where you drink coffee on Saturday mornings.
The wrong deck sits empty. Too small, wrong shape, wrong material, dated finishes that start peeling two summers in. The right deck gets used every night from May through October.
The difference is in how it is designed. Not dropped from a catalog. Designed around your home, your lot, your life.
What We Build
Every project starts from scratch. No templates. We handle the full range of custom deck builds across Grand Rapids and West Michigan:

Composite Decks
Low-maintenance composite decking in a range of colors and finishes. Scratch-resistant, fade-resistant, designed for Michigan weather.

TimberTech & AZEK Decks
Signature Decks is a TimberTech Platinum Contractor and AZEK certified builder. That means we’re in the top tier of builders these manufacturers trust with their premium product lines.

Custom Wood Decks
Cedar, mahogany, pressure-treated. For homeowners who want the traditional look and smell of a wood deck and are prepared for the maintenance that comes with it.

Multi-Level & Elevated Decks
Walkout lower levels, second-story decks, deck-to-patio transitions. These are the builds where craftsmanship matters most, and where lower-tier builders cut corners you’ll regret.

Covered Decks & Roofed Outdoor Living
Year-round usability. Rain, sun, or snow on the roof above your head while you’re on the deck below. Complete designs including ceiling fans, lighting, and electrical.

Deck Replacement & Rebuilds
Old deck coming apart? We assess what can be saved, what needs to go, and build back better. Includes the structural work most contractors skip.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a custom deck build take?
From signed contract to final walkthrough, most deck projects run 4 to 8 weeks depending on size, complexity, and permit timelines. You’ll have a full timeline during the design phase.
How do I plan my deck project?
Start with how you’ll use the space, not the materials. Think about entertaining, traffic flow, furniture size, sun exposure, and any features you want (lighting, built-ins, roof). Pull photos of decks you like. Bring all of it to your consultation — the clearer your vision, the faster we can translate it into a design that fits your home and budget.
What does a custom deck cost in Grand Rapids?
Costs vary widely by size, material, and features. Small pressure-treated decks start around the mid four figures. Large composite or TimberTech projects with multi-level designs and features run mid five figures and up. For detailed cost ranges, see our Deck Pricing Guide.
Why don't you list pricing by square foot?
Square-foot pricing is misleading. A simple 200 sq ft deck and a 200 sq ft multi-level composite deck with railing upgrades cost very different amounts. We price every project from its actual design — materials, elevation, structural complexity, features — so you get a real number, not a ballpark that changes when the design comes in.
What is a TimberTech Platinum Contractor?
It’s the top tier of TimberTech’s dealer network. Platinum Contractors are vetted for craftsmanship, experience, and volume. We get access to the premium AZEK product lines and extended warranties that aren’t available to standard contractors.
Composite or wood?
Depends on how you plan to use and maintain the deck. Composite is lower maintenance, longer lasting, and performs better in Michigan weather, but costs more upfront. Wood is warmer in appearance and lower in upfront cost but requires annual staining or sealing.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Kent County?
Yes, most deck builds require a building permit in Kent County. We handle the permit application and inspections as part of your project. You don’t navigate that process alone.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer financing options so homeowners don’t have to delay their project. Details and rates are discussed during your consultation.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Signature Decks & Construction carries full general liability insurance and worker’s comp, and we hold the licenses required for deck and outdoor construction work in Kent County and surrounding municipalities. You’re welcome to request certificates of insurance before any project starts.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Consultations and estimates are free. The only exception is if a project requires input from a structural engineer (rare, and usually only on major rebuilds or complex elevations) — we’d tell you about any engineering fee before it’s incurred, with no obligation.
Is Signature's pricing competitive?
Yes, and you’ll see exactly why before any contract is signed. Scott runs an open-book approach to pricing — realistic line-item allowances, material costs spelled out, and a clear written scope. The goal is no surprises at the end of the project, and our clients consistently tell us the value shows up in the finished work.
Ready to love your outdoor space?
Free consultation, no sales pressure, no obligation. Tell us about your project and we’ll take it from there.
